For the Holidays, the Loew’s Jersey has established some of its own traditions that we want to remind you about now, so hopefully you’ll be able to add them to your calendar.
And we also are hoping you’ll be able to help us with them in any one of a few important ways.
“The Classic Holiday Show” is a “new” tradition we began in 2010 that’s really a throwback to the Christmastime pageants that theatres used to put on, way back when – a live concert of seasonal music followed by a Holiday movie, just like that really big theatre in New York City used to do.
This year’s Classic Holiday Show is on Sat., Dec. 9, starting at 4:30PM with a concert that will include Loew’s favorites Tareas Blunda, Howard Richman, a few special guests, and Bernie Anderson on the Wonder Organ. And of course they’ll be an audience sing-along with the organ. And this year’s movie is “Miracle On 34th Street.”
Speaking of new and not so new traditions, it was 24 Holiday Seasons ago that the Loew’s first brought Santa to Journal Square, and we haven’t missed a year since. Our annual Visit & Photo with Santa will be on Sat., Dec 9 from 11AM to 1:30PM. It’s a great way to get in the Holiday spirit, and makes special memories for all the kids who come. As always, the visit in the decorated Grand Lobby is free, and a photo will be an affordable $5 — BUT what we really hope is that kids or their parents bring a new toy for a needy child, and if they do the photo will be free too as our “thank you”.
And then there’s a tradition of trying to come up with a classic film to show the Friday night before Santa’s Visit and the Classic Holiday Show that’s not one of the typical movies shown at Christmastime, but still somehow fits the season. This year it’s “On Dangerous Ground” – an unusual Film Noir that (believe it or not) is set in a wintry countryside and, unlike most movies of its genre, holds out the hope of redemption. It will be a rare 35mm screening of that movie.
We hope you’ll want to be a part of all of these Holiday happenings at the Loew’s by coming to them . . . AND – if you can squeeze in the time — help make them happen in one of several vital ways.
We REALLY need people to get some flyers about the shows and Santa around in stores, windows, mail rooms and bulletin boards in Jersey City and wherever else you can — including some of the other classic film venues in New York. If you’d like to help with flyer distribution, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
And of course, we can use help with set up and also running each event.
If you’d like to help with decorating for the holidays and/or making our holiday events happen, please read on and email us at email@example.com. Or if you’re not sure you can make it, just come by if you’re available at the last minute!
Holiday Decorating Schedule
Thursday 11/30 and Friday, 12/1 from 4pm to 8pm –
Sunday, 12/3 from 2pm to 6pm
Tues,12/5 & Wed. 12/6 from 4pm to 8pm
If you enjoy decorating, boy have you found the right place! Here’s a sample of what’s in store:
Moving our decorations from storage to the Lobby; testing light sets; decorating both small trees and the big tree that sits on the Lobby table; wrapping empty boxes to be used in our Santa set: putting decorations such as our famous animated figures, and other decorations around the Lobby; prepping and re-painting Santa’s platform; setting up Santa’s set with the wrapped packages and stuffed toys.
Help with Running our Holiday Events
If you’re not so much in to decorations as operations, we still have lots of ways for you to get involved:
Friday, 12/8 starting at 4:30pm we’ll start setting up the lobby and concessions supplies. We need to get popcorn boxes opened and ready to be filled with popcorn, make popcorn, set up concessions candy, set up ticket tables, and tidy up the lobby & auditorium a little before our patrons arrive.
Doors open at 7:20pm for the 8pm show. Volunteers should arrive around 6:30pm if at all possible. We’ll need concession assistants; ticket sellers, ticket takers and ushers, and at the end of the screening we’ll need help cleaning the auditorium. The film should end around 9:30pm.
Saturday, 12/9 – Holiday Events
– No elf experience necessary! We’ll need volunteers starting at 10am
to help run Santa’s visit. Volunteers will sell photo tickets to those who want a photo with Santa. We’ll also need lobby assistants to help guide people to the Santa line, assist kids as they step up to greet Santa and step down after their visit, and we’ll need a couple of people to assist our photographer distribute Santa photos to waiting families.
Break Down From Santa’s Visit 1:30 – 2:30. Move Santa’s platform, printers, lights, etc. out of the way.
Holiday Concert & Film Screening 3:30pm to 8:30pm
Once Santa’s set is cleaned up, we’ll start getting concessions set up and popcorn made for our Holiday concert & film screening.
Doors open at 3:50pm so we need volunteers to arrive around 2:30pm if possible. We’ll need concession assistants, ticket sellers, ticket takers and ushers, and at the end of the screening we’ll need help cleaning the auditorium. Film should end around 7:45pm.
If at all possible, please email us in advance so that we know how many volunteer will be working. Knowing that helps us to plan our schedules more accurately. The email address to use is firstname.lastname@example.org
We hope you’ll join us to make some Holiday fun and memories happen at the Loew’s this season!
