Make Your Mark On History . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At The Loew’s Jersey — Volunteer This Summer!

Balcony Seat & BalustradeUntil Jersey City keeps its commitment to FOL and does what it is supposed to do as the owner of the Loew’s to fix the Theatre’s fire escapes and make other code-related improvements, the Loew’s big balcony can’t be used for shows.  That’s a big problem, because those extra seats would make it possible to book in bigger acts.  But FOL continues to hope the City will start being reasonable, so we lead by example by continuing to do our part toward opening the balcony.  This summer, volunteers will continue to refinish the metal frames of the balcony seats, refinish the wooden armrests, reinstall re-upholstered backs and bottoms and also refinish the ornate balustrades that line the seating sections.  Volunteers have already restored the balustrade and most of the seats in the Loge, or front portion of the Balcony.  Now they are working on the first of the four section of the Main Balcony.

Skills Needed:  Brush and roller painting for the metal seat frames and balustrade columns.  Sanding, staining and brush-applying clear coat for the wooden armrests and balustrade cap.  Using wrenches and a drill and screwdriver to install the upholstered backs and bottoms.  Some past experience will be helpful, but an experienced FOL volunteer will guide the work.  Some bending and kneeling will be necessary .

Tools & Materials That Will Be Provided:  Water-based epoxy primer and finish paint, brushes, rollers, sandpaper, electric palm sander, stain and clear coat, knee pads.

Number of People Needed:  Up to five on any one day.

Length of Project:  Ongoing.

Commitment:  We ask people interested in this project to commit at least one day.
