Loew’s Rewind: Marquee

Old Marquee REWIND.jpg

While we wait for the re-created version to start being assembled, here’s what the original marquee on the Loew’s looked like in November, 1932.

The “Loew’s Jersey” and the borders were neon. The letterboard used flat sheets of copper with stencil-like cut-outs that fit into track and allowed light from behind to shine through the cut-out open letters.

The original marquee was altered in the later 1930s to add neon-covered towers on either corner, and taller letterboards on the side. That altered version was completely replaced in 1949 with the design most people remember, that was in use until demolished a few years ago as part of the Theatre’s big renovation.
